Acne, post-acne marks or melasma: different questions

A blemish and the discoloration left after it clears are not the same concern. Treating every dark mark as active acne can lead to the wrong product comparison.

Separate the breakout from the remaining mark

Describe whether a lesion is currently raised, inflamed or painful, or whether the concern is a flat mark left afterward. AAD discusses post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as discoloration that can follow acne, particularly in darker skin tones.[source]

That distinction helps explain why an acne treatment and a pigment treatment may have different roles in a clinician’s plan.

A dark patch is not a complete diagnosis

Melasma, post-inflammatory marks and other causes of discoloration can look similar to a non-specialist. Do not use a product page to diagnose a new or changing lesion. An appropriate examination may be needed.

The goal is to identify the concern before deciding which ingredient category belongs on the shortlist.

Some ingredients have more than one role

AAD discusses azelaic acid in acne care and in relation to the dark marks that follow acne. That does not mean every pigment treatment is appropriate for active breakouts or that every acne cream treats every form of discoloration.[source]

A personalized formula should have an explained rationale for the selected ingredients. Ask which concern each active is meant to address.

Do not merge separate catalog entries

CoreAge Rx markets Pore Favor for acne-prone and congested skin and Spot On for pigment concerns. They have different ingredient lists. Their placement in the same catalog does not make one a stronger version of the other.[source]

The selected prescription should define whether a product is appropriate and how it fits with other treatment. This article does not recommend combining them.

Use progress and symptoms to guide reassessment

Ask the clinician how active acne and residual discoloration will be reviewed separately. Persistent inflammation, new marks or irritation may change the plan. The care-escalation guide explains why a cream shortlist is sometimes only the beginning.
